AUGUSTA---After recently reading a book about Veterans Day, fourth graders at St. Michael Catholic School in Augusta were moved by what they had learned about the meaning of the day.
“Veterans risked their lives for us to be free,” said Kody Goucher.
“They served our country,” said Alyssa Ouellette. “Why wouldn’t we celebrate it?”
On Tuesday, November 10, prior to the release of students, a schoolwide assembly was held to honor veterans for their service and sacrifice. Kevin Cullen, principal of St. Michael and a Navy veteran, explained the importance of thanking those who served.
“If it weren’t for the bravery and courage of these men and women, we wouldn’t be living in the best country on earth,” said Cullen. “On this day, be sure to thank a veteran that you know.”
The fourth-grade class did just that. They created homemade cards for veterans who work at the school and for veterans at the Maine Veterans’ Home in Augusta. Selected students visited the home on Tuesday afternoon and delivered the cards to show their gratitude for all the things veterans have done to make our country safe (pictures/captions below).
