PORTLAND---With gratitude for his long, faithful ministry in the Diocese of Portland, Bishop Robert P. Deeley has announced that Fr. Eugene F. Gaffey will retire from active ministry on July 1, 2016.
Born in Milton, Massachusetts, Fr. Gaffey completed his clerical studies at St. Paul’s University Seminary in Ottawa, Canada, before being ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Peter L. Gerety on May 17, 1969, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland.
From 1969 to 1979, Fr. Gaffey served as an associate pastor in several parishes, including Our Lady of Ransom Parish in Mechanic Falls, St. Joseph Parish in Portland, St. John the Baptist Parish in Winslow, and St. Mary Parish in Presque Isle, where he also served as chaplain at the University of Maine-Presque Isle.
In June of 1979, he was appointed pastor of St. Mary Star of the Sea Parish in Stonington and chaplain at Maine Maritime Academy in Castine. Fr. Gaffey has also served as the pastor of St. Denis Parish in North Whitefield, Our Lady of Good Hope Parish in Camden, St. Joseph Parish in Eastport, Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha (now St. Kateri Tekakwitha) Parish in Calais, and St. Peter the Fisherman Parish in Machias, where he has served since July of 2008. In addition to his parish duties, Fr. Gaffey has also served as a member of the diocesan liturgical commission.
