Many St. Michael parishioners are helping at food banks. Many more told us on a survey last winter that they are interested in getting involved with a food bank, or in helping to grow food, or in helping to deliver hot meals to shut-ins. In response, the St. Michael Social Justice Commission has scheduled a special event on May 24 at the Sacred Heart Hall in Hallowell at 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. to introduce parishioners to what is going on in the area to help people with food, and discuss other ideas we might pursue.
One in seven Kennebec County residents are defined by the federal government as “food insecure” – unable to afford a healthy and stable diet. This is more than 17,000 people. It’s a big problem. We will have a speaker talking about the spiritual dimension of performing the works of mercy. We will have a speaker giving an overview of poverty in the area. We will have representatives of almost every food bank and agency involved with food. We will even have our own Father Samy to meet with anyone who might want to work on a community garden in 2019! More details will be coming in the next two weeks. In the meantime, save the date on your calendar. It’s an opportunity for us to learn, help, and act in our faith.
