PORTLAND---In response to inquiries from parishes, parishioners, and community members looking to donate to the victims of the devastating flooding in Louisiana, Bishop Robert P. Deeley asks that contributions be sent to Catholic Charities USA which is currently providing families and individuals affected by the disaster with immediate and long-term relief.
“The Church mourns the suffering of all victims in need of immediate necessities and recovery assistance,” said Bishop Deeley. “Catholic Charities USA is providing shelter, food, clothing, and compassionate care to thousands in need, regardless of race, religion, or ethnicity. Please join me in praying for those affected, the many people contributing to the rescue and recovery efforts, and that our gracious God will alleviate the suffering of our brothers and sisters in Louisiana, allowing them to live in peace.”
As a result of the flooding, as many as 60,000 homes have been damaged, 20,000 people have been rescued from the flood waters, and more than 100,000 individuals and families have sought federal disaster aid.
“Immediate and long-term recovery needs place a tremendous burden on public and private resources. This is a burden we can help carry as the body of Christ,” said Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz, president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. “Faced with the loss of their worldly possessions and, in some cases, economic livelihood, the flood waters left thousands of families feeling isolated and fearful. Let us draw near to them and support the humanitarian efforts of Catholic Charities USA.”
